At Wōcc, “women of color” refers to Black, Indigenous, Latina, Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and other women.
We use the term not as a demographic label, but as a political and cultural identity rooted in solidarity, healing, and justice.
Too often, women of color are pressured to assimilate into dominant white supremacist culture — beginning with indoctrination in the school system and reinforced later through standards of “professionalism.”
Many of us eventually recognize that we’ve been living on auto-pilot, adopting ways of thinking, acting, and being that society has taught us without ever asking: Who decided this is normal? And who benefits when we conform?
It is also important to acknowledge and name the racism and colorism within and amongst black and brown cultures, especially amongst ethnicities that are able to pass as and benefit from aligning themselves closer to whiteness. Oh yes, we’re going to talk about it.
What do we mean when we say “women of color?”
Please note: Wōcc is proudly women of color-led and rooted in the experiences, cultures, and communities that shape us. Our doors, however, are open to all women. We welcome women across identities, backgrounds, abilities, beliefs, and life experiences, and are committed to providing space for every woman.

We acknowledge that much of our work takes place on the territory and ancestral lands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations. We also acknowledge our debt to enslaved Africans, whose labor and suffering built and grew the economy and infrastructure of a nation that refuses to recognize our humanity.
